Association between blood pressure level and metabolic syndrome

Objective To study the association between blood pressure(BP)level and metabolic syndrome(MS)and to explore effective factors.Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in occupational population who received medical examination in Heilongjiang electricity hospital from April to September in 2006.A total of 1598 subjects people was included aged from 20 to 70.Information was collected and waist circumference,BP,fasting blood glucose and blood lipid-profile were measured.Results The significant effective factor of BP level and MS included gender,alcohol consumption,educational background,physical activity and family history of diabetes mellitus.The prevalence of MS went up with the ascending of BP level.Odds ratios(OR)between every two consecutive levels was 4 in normal pressure,prehypertensive and hypertensive groups,and it was 17 between hypertensive and normal pressure groups.Stage 1 and stage 2 hypertensive groups had no significant difference.The prevalence of MS went up more sharply with the increase of systolic blood pressure than that of diastolic blood pressure.The prevalence went up much higher in male than female when comparing between prehypertensive and normal pressure groups.But when compared between hypertensive and non-hypertensive groups,female's was higher.Conclusion The prevalence of MS had a trend of upward with the ascending of BP level.But ithad no significant upward in hypertensive groups and the ranges were different in male and female.
