Impact upon parents of peer education project on HIV/AIDS prevention

  • Objective To evaluate the impact upon parents.know ledge and attitudes of "Red Ribbon Youth Action" peer education project on HIV/AIDS prevention developed in elementary schools and high schools.Methods 312 parents from project schools and 358 parents from non-project schools were investigated in 5provinces and cities during November to December 2005.Results The awareness rate of knowledge abouthIV/AIDS of parents from project schools(78.75%)was higher than those from non-project schools(74.71%),and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).There was no significance between parents from project schools and non-project schools in AIDS related attitudes and communication between parents and their children(P>0.05).65.1% of all parents chose-Regularity courses opened by schools.as the approach that their children get information about AIDS prevention,and only 16.1% of the parents chose-peereducation.and it was eighth.Conclusion The peereducation project improved parents.know ledge about AIDS in some extent,but the effects that ithas on family and community was not seen and it required par ents.further acceptance and admission.
