Investigation on mental health and related factors in migrant female industrial workers

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the status of mental health of migrant female industrial workers and to analyse related factors.Methods1 485 migrant female industrial workers in Guangming new developmental area of Shenzhen city were recruited by stratification cluster sampling and tested with psychological questionnaire including Symptom Check List (SCL-90),Work Stress Questio nnaire,Social Support Scale(SSRS)and self-designed questionnaire about general status of participators.ResultsThe total score of SCL-90 of migrant female industrial workers correlated with age and income at low degree(P<0.000 1).19.19% of participators had mental health problems(any factor score of SCL-90≥3).The main mental health problems(incidence≥7%)in descending order were hostility,depression and obsession.Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that factors related to mental health were work stress,social support,the will to come to Shenzhen, adaptation to local place and character of work.ConclusionThe study suggests that controlling stress effectively,enhancing social supprt,increasing incomes,improving adaptation to local place are the feasible means to promote mental health of migrant female industrial workers.
