Epidemiological survey of the road traffic injury among school children in Shenzhen

  • ObjectiveTo study the characteristics of road traffic injury(RTI)of school children in Shenzhen and to provide relative reference for RTI prevention and control.MethodsStratified cluster sampling method was used to investigate 27 125 students from 21 different primary or middle schools.The questionnaire was based on Survey on Road Traffic Injury to Pedestrian Primary and Middle School Students.ResultsThe RTI rate of Shenzhen school children was 5.1% and the rate of boys was slightly higher than that of girls.The rates of primary and junior middle school students were higher than that of senior middle school students.The most frequent RTI was bicycle riding(6.2%)and the most frequent venue was pavement (29.4%).The majority of RTI was limb injury(61.8%),with wounds of scratch or wrench(61.3%).15.0% of the victims suffered from functional disability.ConclusionPrimary and junior middle school students are the major casualties of RTI.Bicycle riding is the main cause of accidents.The bicycles are involved in most of the accidents are but injuries caused by minimotor vehicles are involved in severe RTIs.
