Eeffect of health edutation on AIDS among peasant coal workers in Jingxing mine

  • Objective To get information about AIDS/HIV knowledge among peasant coal workers in the Jingxing coal mine of Hebei province,and search a suitable intervention mode.Methods 1 051 male coal miners with different types of work were chosen for the study.After the baseline survey,sustained publicity and education activities were taken for five months,including health education posters,expert's lectures and videos,the use of condom and so on.Results The knowledge,attitude and practice about AIDS changed significantly in the participants.The rate of getting relevant information form professional lecture and trainning rose from 7.58% to 25.00% and 2.46% to 13.18%,respectively.After 3 months.The proportion of coal miners self-reported non-married sex reduced to 7162%.The ratio of those using condoms when making love with unstable sexual partners was raised from 24.42% to 42.31%,while the ratio also elevated to 36107% with wives.All differences were of statistical significance.Conclusion Relying on "Mine Workers Center" and the mass media,it should be considered as effective and feasible to carry on AIDS/HIV intervention in peasant coal workers by regular AIDS professionals lectures,interactive training,and exchange with medical staff.
