Associations between body mass index and hypertension subtypes in Zhangwu population of Liaoning province

  • Objective To explore the relationships between body mass index and isolated systolic hypertension(ISH),isolated diastolic hypertension(IDH)and systolic and diastolic hypertension(SDH)in adult population in Zhangwu region of Liaoning province. Methods 6 710 representative sample of adults were randomly selected. The prevalence, odds ratios and attributable risk proportion of all the three hypertension subtypes were compared in different BMI and sex groups. Results The mean values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were increased with the levels of BMI.Meantime, the prevalence and odds ratios of the three hypertension subtypes also developed step by step with BMI increasing. As compared with normal weight, men in overweight and obesity groups(BMI≥24 kg/m2)had 2116(1.66,2183),2.11(1.76,2.53)times more likely to have IDH or SDH,respectively, while women had 1.62(1.24,2.13)and 2121(1.90,2.57)times as well(P<0.05).The attributable risk proportion in males due to overweight(BMI≥24 kg/m2)was 53170% for IDH and 52.60% for SDH,respectively, while in females,38.27% for IDH and 54.75% for SDH.Conclusion The levels of BMI were found positively associated with IDH and SDH hypertension subtypes.Losing weight and controlling obesity should play an important role in preventing the incidences of IDH and SDH.
