Abstract
Objective To analyze epidemiolog ic character istics of diabetes mellitus(DM)and impaired glucose regulation(IGR)among rural residents aged>25 years in midwestern area of Shandong province. Methods By multi- stage and randomization sampling method,a sample of 16 388 rural residents was selected and investigated. All participants were interviewed with a standard questionnaire.Height, weight, waist circumference and fasting plasma glucose(FPG)were measured using standardized method.Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT)were performed for subjects with FPG valued from 6.1 to 7.0 mmol/L.Isolated IFG(I-IFG),impaired fasting glucose with impaired glucose tolerance(IFG/IGT)and DM were defined according to the criteria of WHO 1999.Results Age-adjusted prevalence rate for IFG,DM,-IIFG,IFG/IGT was 6.85%,3.38%,4.41%,0.83%,respectively.With the increasing of age, waist circumference,BMI(body mass index),the prevaleace of I-IFG,IFG/IGT and DM increased.Measurements of -IIFG and IFG/IGT showed higher prevalence among those aged >35 years, while DM was higher among those aged >45 years.IFG/IGT and DM were higher among those with waist circumference≥85 cm in male and ≥80 cm in female. The prevalence of I-IFG,IFG/IGT and DM increased significantly for those BMI ≥24.Age,waist circumference,BMI,waist to height radio, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure increased in the order of normal population,I-IFG,IFG/IGT and DM group. There was no difference between IFG/IGT and DM groups.Conclusion-IIFG,IFG/IGT and DM showed same prevalence char acters in the study population.DM and IGT should be set for publicity and early prevention.
