Correlative analysis of psychological health status and personality characteristics of teachers in Xinjiang autonomus region

  • Objective To study the mental health and personality characteristics of teachers at different levels in Xinjiang autonom us region,and to study the relationship between the mental health and personality characteristics.Methods According to age,gender,nationality,educational background and area,a total of 597 teachers was enrolled by stratified sampling.All the subjects were evaluated by Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ)and Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90).Results Six hundred and one questionnaires were distributed and 597 returned with an valid rate of 99.5%.(1)EPQ'sevaluation:there were 120 teachers with EPQ-P factor scores≥70(20.1%).Introverted personality accounted for 28.6% of the subjects and middle type accounted for 48.1% and extroversion,23.3% by EPQ-E factor.The stable emotion,middle type and the instable emotion accounted for 6.9%,50.6% and 42.5% of the subjects,respectively by EPQ-N factor.(2) SCL-90 outcomes:there were 71 subjects(11.9%)presented mildmental problem with 75(12.6%)mode rate and 71 (11.9%)severe subjects.The proportion of total score of SCL-90 over 160 was 36.3%.The total mean score of SCL-90 and scores of all subscales of the subjects were higher than that of the national norm(P<0.01).The top four factors were somatization,interpersonal sensitivity,obsessive-compulsion and depression.(3)There were significant correlation between the total scores of SCL-90 and EPQ.Among the four personality dimensions of EPQ,EPQ-P and EPQ-N had the significant positive correlation with SCL-90 symptom factors,whereas EPQ-E and EPQ-L had negative correlation with SCL-90 symptom factors.Conclusion There are mental health problems and significant correlation between the total scores of SCL-90 and EPQ among the teachers.Effective measures should be taken to enhance the psycho logical health and well personality for teachers in Xinjiang autonomous region.
