Analysis on characteristic and risk factors of road traffic accidents among middle school students

  • ObjectiveTo explore the characteristic and risk facto rs of RTAs(road traffic accidents)among middle school students.MethodsStudents of 7 middle schools were chosen as a cluster sample.Self designed questionnaire was used to collect basic data of the students and the information of RTAs among them from Jan.1 of 2005 to Dec.31 of 2005.Characteristics of RTAs were analyzed,and logistic regression was performed to explore the risk factors for RTAs.ResultsThe annual incidence rate of RTAs was 2.28%,with a male vs female ratio of 1.81:1.Bicycle accident played an important role in RTAs(accounted for 70%),while less than 40% of the students learned traffic regulations in tensively before they normally rode bicycle to schools.Most of the road traffic injuries(RTls)were light injuries,with 91.2% treated in outpaient clinic.Only 13.4% of RTAs were hand led by traffic policem an,and about 8.2% of the wounded gained compensation from medical insurance.Single variable and multi variable analysis indicated that gender,road crossing times from home to school were significantly associated with RTAs for middle school students.ConclusionThe annual incidence rate of RTAs was 2% for middle school students.Bicycle related accidents should be emphasized in prevention and control for RTAs among middle school students.Male and more road crossing times from home to school were main risk factors of RTAs for middle school students.
