Incidence of metabolic syndrome in primary hypertensive and normotensive people

  • Objective To investigate the incidence of metabolic syndrome(MS)in primary hype rtensive and normotensive subjects. Methods Across-sectional study was conducted among 429 subjects chosen from clinical patients and divided in totwo groups as primary hype rtensive subjects(HT=295)and normo tensive subjects(NT=134).The diagnos is of MS was based on the standard definition by JCD CG.Results The inc idence of metabolic syndrome in hypertensive subjects was 47.1% and the incidence of obesity and abdominal obesity was 67.5% and 64.1%,respectively.Patients suffering from both hype rtension and abdominal obesity were 8.06(95%CI:4.76-13.64)times more likely to develop MS than patients with only one risk factor. The risks for HT group to develope MS,abdominal obesity, obesity, abnormal waist/hipratio,and dys lipidemia were 4.57,3.61,3.22,2.23,and 1.08 times of that for NT group(P<0.001).After excluding the hypertensive risk factor,HT group was 2.83,6.86,7.59,and 10.29 times likely to have 1 to 4 risk factors of MS than that for NT group. Conclusion The incidence of MS is significantly higher in hype rtensive subjects than normotensive subjects.Hypertensive subjects are more susceptible to other risk factors of MS and tend to suffer from more symptoms of MS.The intevention and treatment of hypertension, especially the prevention of hype rtension combined with obesity is of priority.
