ObjectiveTo explore the relationships betwee esteem,coping style and personality among college students in Guanzhou city.MethodsStratified cluster random sampling was used to select 3 662 students in seven universities in Guangzhou.Exploratory factor analysis and canonical correlation analysis were used to analyze the relationships between esteems,coping style and personality.ResultsThe dimensions with higher scores in Big-Five personality inventory among the students were sociability(55.92±9.31)and openness(52.24±8.62),and that with the lowest score was adaptability (50.25±8.94).The canonical correlation coefficient for personality characteristic and the self-esteem was 0.54 (P=0.000).The positive coping style showed positive correlations with sociability,altruism and morality,and negative correlations with adaptability and openness.On the contrary,self-esteem and the negative coping style had positive correlations with adaptability and openness,and negative correlations with sociability,altruism and morality.ConclusionPersonal characters of college students are close relative to self-esteem and coping style.The positive coping style and self-affirmation are important to develop good personality traits and promote mental health for college students.
