Incidence of unsafe driving behaviors and its related risk factors

Objective To understand unsafe driving behaviors and its related risk factors in Guangdong province,and to provide information for traffic in jury prevention.Methods Multi-stage stratified random sampling method was used for selecting the sample.Aquestionnaire was used to collect data about unsafe driving behaviors and related risk factors among residents of 15-69 years old.Results For previous one month,the incidence rate of unsafe driving was 73.9%(88.3% for rural area and 57.8% for urban area).The incidence of unsafe diving was higher among males(76.4%)than that among females(66.7%).The rates of driving without seatbelt,drinking driving,fatigue driving and driving without license were 35.2%,12.2%,9.3%and 26.6%,respectively.The results from multiplelogistic regression showed that rural area (oddsratioOR=1.9)and stressful work(OR=2.2)increased the risk of nonuse seatbelt while driving,and higher education level was a protectve factor(OR=0.3).Males(OR=6.4)and drinkers(OR=9.1)were at higher risk of drinking driving.Male drivers were more likely to driving with fatigue(OR=4.6)compared to females.Drivers fromrural area (OR=5.9)and with poor mental status(OR=1.9)were more pro bably to driving without license,but drivers with higher education(0.3,0.2-0.5)and higher in come(0.3,0.1-0.7)were less likely to drive without license.Con clusion The unsafe driving behaviors are very common in Guangdong province.Socioeconomic and personal factors are related to unsafe driving.Comprehen sive counterm easures are needed to reduce the unsafe driving behaviors.
