Protective effect of garlic oil on alcoholic fatty liver disease in mice

  • ObjectiveTo explore the protective effect of garlic oil on alcoholic fatty liver.MethodsNinety mice were divided into six groups(15 in each group).Alcoholic fatty liver model was established by high fat diet plus ethanol. The mice of garlic oil groups were administered orally with different doses of garlic oil once a day, while the control and model group animals were treated with the same volume of corn oil.At the end of 3 weeks, liver pathologic changes together with the levels of serum alanine aminotrans ferase(ALT),aspartase amino-transferase(AST),total cholesterol(TC),malondaldehyde(MDA)and the contents of liver MDA,glutathione(GSH),superoxide dismutase(SOD),TC,triglyceride(TG), and free fatty acid(FFA)were examined.ResultsCompared with the model group, the levels of TC,AST,ALT,and MDA in serum of high doses garlic oil groups were decreased by 22.42%,25.51%,12.43% and 26.27% (P<0.01 or P<0.05),and the levels of TC,TG,FFA,MDA in liver tissue were decreased by 25.00%,27.85%,41.13%,60.96%, and the level of GSH was increased by 100.00% (P<0.01).The hepatic steatosis degrees were attenuated obviously. The effect of low dose group was similar to that of tiopronin group.ConclusionGarlic oil has protective effect on alcoholic fatty liver in mice.
