Prevalence of smoking and alcohol drinking behavior among adolescent students in Tonglu county

ObjectiveTo understand the status of the smoking and alcohol drinking behavior among adolescent students in Tonglu county,Zhejiang province.MethodsAn anonymous survey with Chinese Adolescent Health-related Behavior Questionnaire was conducted among 1092 students from five full-time schools(including junior high school,high school and vocational high school)in Tonglu.ResultsAmong the students,332(30.4%)had tried cigarette before the age of 13 and 25(2.3%)of them smoked daily.Of all the students,676(61.9%)had drank alcohol;275(25.2%)drank alcohol recently;309(28.3%)drank alcohol before the age of 13;78(7.1%)drank heavily;115(10.5%)had history of drunk.Except for drunk history,the smoking and alcohol drinking behaviors were more prevalent among the boys than among the girls.With the increases of age and grade,behaviors of smoking and alcohol drinking among the students raised.ConclusionSmoking and alcohol drinking are very prevalent among adolescent students in Tonglu and effective interventions should be taken to reduce physical and mental health hazards caused by smoking and alcohol drinking among the students.
