Correlation between contraceptive methods and induced abortion among rural married women

  • Objective To explore current status of married women in regard to their use of contraceptive methods and to find out the correlation between contraceptive methods and induced abortion in order to provide evidence for reproductive healthcare in rural married women.Methods On the basis of keeping a representation of the cities, 52 481 women aged 15-49 years were surveyed by using stratified-cluster-random sampling.Investigation and gynecological examination were conducted by two steps, firstly converging at the clinics, and then a thomes of the women.Results In the previous 6 months, the total birth control rate of the women was 95.2% (n=49 970).The ratios of choosing permanent and nonpermanent contraceptive methods were 46.7% (n=24 481) and 48.5% (n=25 489), respectively.Female sterilisation was the first choice with a usage rate of 43.7% (n=22 916), followed by intraute rine device(IUD), which was used by 41.1% (n=21 563) of the women.Of the women choosing permanent contraceptive methods, 25.2% (n=6 165) had a history of induced abortion.Among the women choosing nonpermanent contraceptive methods, 38.0% (n=9 684) had a history of induced abortion.In the women never using contraceptive method during intercourse, 37.9% (n=951) had a history of induced abortion.Single-variable analysis showed that the choice of contraceptive method was associated with induced abortion(X2=983.16, P<0.001).Conclusion The efficiency of contraception has a relation with induced abortion.The related deparmtent should carry out health education on contraception method in order to improve the efficiency of contraception and reduce the rate of induced abortion.
