Hospitalization expense of ovarian cancer patients with medical insurance and its influencing factors

Objective To identify hospita lization expense and its influencing facyors among ovarian cancer patients with medical in surance in Tianjin for the control of irrational increase in medical expense.Methods Atotal of 1 635 ovarian cancer patients in a hospital of Tianjin from 2003 to 2007 were included and their hospitalization expenses were analyzed.Results The sum and the median of hospitalization cost perpatient was 20 035 629.53 RMB Yuan and 9824.59 RMB Yuan from 2003 to 2007.The items of the hospita lization cost for the patients were drug (72.35%), ex am ina tion (13.53%), treamtent (5.88%), operation (3.37%), bed charge (3.22%), materials (0.35%), blood transfusion (0.39%), component blood transfusion(0.48%), and other items(0.43%).The total cost was positively correlated with the duration of hospitalization and the grade of the hospital.Conclusion Reducing the proportion of drug and examination fee and reducing the duration of hospitalization are the key points to the control of ho spitalization expense for ovarian cancer patient.
