Knowledge and attitude to drug induced abortion among abortion service providers

  • Objective To under stand knowledge and attitude to drug induced abortion(DIA) and the influential factors among abortion service providers.Methods Totally 658 abortion service providers from family planning service centers (FPSC) and hospitals in Shenzhen and Henan were selected with multiple stratified randomly sampling and surveyed with a self administered questionnaire.Results For the total DIA score of 100.0, the highest score among the providers was 78.1 and the median was 56.3.Among the providers, 29.0% got a scores of 60 or above and 71.0% got a score of 59 or below.The in fluential factors of knowledge score were age (odds ratioOR=1.058), the location of the providers unit (OR=2.451), and education level(OR=2.574).The first three disadvantages of DIA recognized by the providers were much more bleeding (60.2%), higher failure rate(49.4%), and longer duration of procedure(48.8%).Among the providers, 20.4% preferred DIA and 35.0% preferred surgical abortion.The influential factor of the preference to abortion methods was unit type of the providers(OR=2.574).Conclusion The level of DIA related knowledge among abortion service providers is low and age, the unit of the provider and education level are related to the knowledge level.Only a small part of providers preferred DIA.
