Influence of diatary on metabolic syndrome among community population

  • Objective To explore the influence of diatary on metabolic syndrome(MS) among community population and to supply dietary improvement suggestions for the prevention of MS.Methods Based on a cross-sectional population study, data were collected with a questionnaire survey, physical examination, and serological examination.Influence factors of MS were analyzed with logistic regression models using SPSS15 0.Results Among 2 943 residents(1 674 men and 1 273 women), the prevalence of MS was 10.32% by Diabetes Branch of Chinese Medical Associatiion(2004) criteria with an increasing tendency with age.The prevalence for hypertension and diabetes among the residents with MS was 55.6% and 20.7%, respectively.Risk factors for MS included age (odds ratioOR=1.280, 95% confidence intervalCI: 1.0591.548), gender(OR=1.769, 95% CI: 1.237-2.528), alcohol consumption(OR=1.961, 95% CI: 1.288-2.985), sodium intake> 300 grams per month (OR=1.990, 95% CI: 1.365-2.901), the history of hypertension (OR=6 868, 95% CI: 5.056-9.328), and diabetes(OR=7.506, 95% CI: 4.665-12.079).Protective factor included nutritional supplements consumption (OR=0.685, 95% CI: 0.476-0.986).The correct prediction probability of MS by logistic regression models was 90.9%.Conclusion Controlling alcohol consumption and salt in the diet, consuming nutritional supplements suitable for MS may be useful to reduce the occurrence of MS.
