Nutrient intakes of Korean and Han nationality boys aged 9-12 years in Jilin city

  • ObjectiveTo evaluate the nutrient intakes in a sample of 367 boys aged 9-12 years Korean-Chinese and Han nationality living in Jilin city.MethodsDietary nutrient intakes were assessed with 3-day dietary records under the help of teachers and parents.ResultsThe mean daily energy intakes were 7.4MJ for Korean-Chinese and 7.5MJ for Han nationality boys,accounting for 77.8% and 81.0% of recommended nutrient intake(RNI),respectively.The mean daily intakes of carbohydrates,protein,and fat were 298.0g,61.5g,and 40.6g for Korean-Chinese boys and 290.3g,67.0g,and 47.4g for Han nationality boys.The mean daily intakes of calcium,zinc,vitamin A,riboflavin,and vitamin C were below the RNI or adequate intake(AI)levels(44.8%-67.6%)in both ethnic boys.The mean intakes of fat,protein,thiamin, vitamin C,and niacin were significantly higher in Han nationality boys than in Korean-Chinese boys(P<0.05).ConclusionThere are deficient micro-nutrient intakes in Korean-Chinese and Han boys aged 9-12 years in Jinlin city.The comprehensive measures should be taken in order to improve nutritional status of the children.
