Gowth and development of Yugur primary and middle school students in Gansu province

  • Objective To investigate the status of growth and development of Yugur teenagers in Gansu province.Methods With cluster sampling,665 Yugur students aged 7-17 years in a primary school and a middle school were surveyed.The measurement of height,weight and other development index were conducted for all students.Results The height and weight of Yugur students were identical with the growth rule of the children at age of 7-17 years.But the mean development level was higer than that of national average in 2002.The maximum differences in height and weight among Yugur girls occured at the age of 11 years(6.5 cm and 3.9 kg),and those of Yugur boys occured at the age of 15 and 17 years(7.5 cm and 8.3 kg).The prevalence of obesity was 6.88% among the boys and 5.29% among the girls.The malnutrition was observed in 10.78% of the boys and 6.23% of the girls.Conclusion The level of growth and development of Yugur teenagers is higher than that of national average in 2002,and there is a polarization trend for the development in the Yugur teenagers.
