Relationship between personality character and mental health among deaf-mute adolescents

  • Objective To explore the relationship between personality character and mental health among deaf-mute adolescents and to provide evidence for mental health education for deaf-mute students. Methods Totally 158 deaf-mute students randomly selected from three deaf-mute schools in Jilin and Guangdong province were tested with Eysenk Personality Questionnaire(EPQ)(adult version,Chinese) and Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90).Results Among the deaf-mute students, the score of psychoticism dimension of EPQ was significantly higher than that of the norm(tmale=5.99,tfemale=5.47,P < 0.01),and the score of neuroticism dimension of EPQ was just the opposite(tmale=-7.11,tfemale=-3.35,P < 0.01).The score of extroversion dimension was significantly lower than that of the norm for the male students(tmale=-4.86,P < 0.01).There was no significant difference in the score of extroversion dimension between the female students and the norm(P > 0.05).The nine factors' scores of the SCL-90 were significantly higher than those of the norm(t=4.21-12.74,P <0.01).There was a positive significant correlation between the psychoticism and neuroticism dimensions of EPQ and several factors of SCL-90(r=0.16-0.31,P < 0.05,P < 0.01),and there was a negative significant correlation between the extroversion dimension of EPQ and several factors of SCL-90(r=-0.19-0.35,P < 0.05,P < 0.01) among the students.Furthermore, the neuroticism and extroversion dimension of EPQ had significant predicting function on the mental health of the deaf-mute adolescents. Conclusion Deaf-mute adolescents has high psychoticism and stable neuroticism, and the male deaf-mute adolescents is introversive. The mental health of deaf-mute adolescents is lower than that of ordinary youth group, and the neuroticism and extroversive-introversive have significant influence on the mental health of deaf-mute adolescents.
