Effects of comprehensive lifestyle intervention among community retirees with high normal blood preesure

  • Objective To evaluate the effects of comprehensive lifestyle intervention among cornmunity retirees with high normal blood pressure and to explore the feasibility of community prevention and treatment on hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. Methods A comprehensive lifestyle intervention was conducted among community enterprise retirees with high normal blood pressure. All retirees received routine medical service in community health centers and the retirees in intervention group received health education and lifestyle intervention. The blood pressure and other measurements of the intervention group were compared to those of the retirees without intervention. Results After 12 months of the intervention, the systolic blood pressure of 120 retirees of intervention group decreased by 9.475±5.969 mmHg; the diastolic blood pressure decreased by 7.600±6.548 mmHg; the waist circumference decreased 2.370±2.550 cm; the body mass index decreased by 0.776±0.768 2.There were significant differences in the decreases of the measurements compared to those of before the intervention and to those of the control group by the end of the study. Conclusion The comprenensive life-style intervention, including education on high blood pressure-related knowledge, diet control, exercise, and abdominal breathing,is feasible and effective among community retirees with high normal pressure for the prevention of hypertension and cardiovasccllar diseases.
