Relationship between sleep quality and anxiety in middle school students in Nanchang city

ObjectiveTo investigate the status of sleep quality and anxiety,and the relationship between sleep quality and anxiety among middle school students in Nanchang city and to provide theoretic basis for intervention measures in the students.MethodsTotally 950 middle school students were selected with cluster sampling and surveyed with questionnaires including Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and a self-designed general questionnaire.ResultsThe overall prevalence of sleep problems was 17.68% in the students.The mean score of PSQI was 5.22±2.31, with subjective sleep quality of 0.58±0.82,sleep latency of 1.79±1.06,sleep duration of 1.33±0.96,habitual sleep efficiency of 0.03±0.27,sleep disturbance of 0.93±0.68,sleep medication use of 0.39±0.59,and daytime dysfunction of 0.16±0.38,respectively.The overall prevalence of anxiety was 31.16% and the standard anxiety score was 45.94±9.57.There were no significant differences in the prevalence and mean score of sleeping problems and anxiety between male and female(P>0.05),but the prevalence and mean score of sleeping problems and anxiety among the students of different grades were different.There were significant positive correlations between the factors and total score of PSQI and anxiety, expect sleep disturbance(r=0.04-0.37,P<0.05).ConclusionThe sleeping problems and anxiety are common in middle school students of Nanchang city,and there is a positive correlation between sleep quality and anxiety.
