Prevalence of pre-diabetes in middle-aged and elderly population of Baoding city

Objective To study the prevalence and risk factors of pre-diabetes in the middle-aged and elderly population of Baoding city and to provide evidence for implementing prevention policies.Methods A cluster-randomized questionnaire survey and fingertip blood glucose test were conducted from May 2008 to January 2009 among 3 250 residents aged above 45 years in two communities of Baoding city.The residents with a capillary blood glucose level ≥5.1 mmol/L were subjected to 75 g oral glucose tolerance test.Results The prevalence rates of impaired glucose regulation(IGR) and diabetics were 8.1% and 21.6%,with the standardized rates of 7.4% and 20.0%,respectively.The prevalence rate of IGR was 9.6% (standardized rates 8.6%) in males and 7.0%(standardized rate 7.0%) in females with no statistical difference between the male and female.The prevalence rates of impired fasting glucose(IFG),impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and IFG/IGT w ere 1.6%,6.5%,and 1.2% with the standardized rates of 1.6%,6.5%,and 1.2%,respectively.With the increase of age,the prevalence of IGR increased(trend test χ²=22.3047,P< 0.05).After univariate logistic regression,14 exposed factors were selected into multivariate logistic regression analysis.Multivariate logistic regression analyses show ed that risk factors of pre-diabetes included tension(odds ratioOR=1.465,95% confidence intervalCI:1.161-1.849),central obesity(OR=2.185,95% CI:1.729-2.762),hyperlipemia (OR=1.663,95% CI:1.339-1.992),and family diabetic history(OR=2.009,95% CI:1.640-2.471),whereas frequent intake of fruits(OR=0.704,95% CI:0.625-0.796) and exercises(OR=0.222,95% CI:0.171-0.671) were the protective factors.Conclusion The prevalence of IGR in the middle-aged and elderly population of Baoding city is in moderate level.Tension,central obesity,hyperlipemia,and diabetic family history are major risk factors of IGR.
