Skin ultraviolet exposure dosimetry using rotating manikin

  • Objective To explore a scientific method for quantification of skin ultraviolet(UV) exposure, especially of facial skin and to determine exposure ratios of forehead and cheek to chest, shoulder and ambient environment by quantifying the individual skin UV exposure dose using a rotating manikin. Methods The UV exposure values of the forehead, cheek, shoulder, and chest were measured at 30 min intervals using solar-UV sensors and a rotating manikin in Shenyang(41°51'N,123°27'E),China.The horizontal UV was also measured during the same experimental period. Results The UV exposure doses at forehead, cheek, shoulder, and chest in four seasons were significantly different in Shenyang, with the intensity order from high to low for anatomical sites of shoulder, forehead, chest, and cheek. The order of UV dose across the seasons was summer, spring, autumn, and winter from high to low.The UV exposure ratios between the forehead and chest, the shoulder as well as the horizon ranged from 1.17 to 1.32,0.65 to 1.10,and 0.51 to 1.09 across the four seasons. While, the exposure ratios between the cheek and chest, shoulder as well as the horizon ranged from 0.29 to 0.44,0.15 to 0.42,and 0.12 to 0.41 across four seasons. Conclusion The facial UV exposure dosage could be obtained by converting the measurement data from ambient and other body parts. How ever, the ratios are different in four seasons.
