Correlation between depression and personality, social support among college students

ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between depression and personality,social support.MethodsA total of 1 100 college students were collected with stratified-cluster sampling in Xinxiang city and asked to complete Percived Social Support(PSSS),Eyscenk Personality Questionnaire(EPQ),and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D).Results The prevalence rate of depression was 81% among the students.Family support, friend support,other support,and perceived social support had negative correlations with depression(r=-0.163,-0.202,-0.219,-0.214;P<0.001 for all).EPQ-neuroticlsm(N)and EPQ-psychoticism(P)had significant positive correlation with depression(r=0.398,0.247).EPQ-extraversion(E)and EPQ-lie(L)were negative predicators of depression (r=-0.172,-0.120).There were obvious positive correlations among the the dimensionalities of PSSS and EPQ-E and EPQ-L,EPQ-N and EPQ-P had significant negative correlations with the dimensionalities of PSSS.ConclusionDepression among college students needs to be concerned.Depression and personality are closely related to social support.
