Correlation between depression and familial environment and coping style among middle school students

  • ObjectiveTo explore the correlation between depression and familial environment and coping style among middle school students.MethodsIn October 2009,62 classes from 3 schools were randomly selected in three administrative districts of Hefei city,China.Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS),Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-Chinses Version(FACESII-CV)and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ)were applied.Results Totally 3 065 students were investigated and 3 040 responded with a response rate of 99.18%.Among all responders, there were 1 031 students had depressive symptoms and the prevalence rate was 33.91%.The average score of depression of the students was 37.95±6.64 and higher than that of the domestic norm(33.5±8.60)with a significant difference(t=36.798,P<0.01).The identified major influential factors of the deperession symptoms included school environment,the adaptability and cohesion of family,study stress,and coping style.ConclusionFamilial environment and coping style both have impact on mental health in middle school students.
