HIV sentinel surveillance among female sex workers in Jingjiang city, 2006-2011

Objective To analyze the time trend of behaviors change related to human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrom(HIV/AIDS) epidemic and to provide basis for comprehensive HIV infection prevention among female sex workers(FSWs).Methods From 2006 through 2011,continuous cross-sectional surveys were conducted among FSWs in communities recruited at entertainment places and in street.Approximate 400 blood samples were collected each year to test for HIV infection and syphilis.Results A total of 2 407 eligible FSWs completed questionnaires and blood tests.The prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis was 0-0.2% and 0-4.5%,respectively.Among the FSWs,71.8%-86.3% used condom all the time in commercial sex during the latest month.The awareness rate of HIV/AIDS transmission in the FSWs was 89.2%-94.3%.The proporton of the FSWs with drug use history was 0.2%-7.7% and the proportion was increasing(Z=6.65,P<0.000 1).There were 64.3%-96.8% and 30.6%-74.1% of the FSWs attending HIV testing and intervention services in the latest year,respectively,and the proportions showed a increasing trend.Conclusion Condom use rate needs to be enhanced among FSWs.HIV prevalence rate among FSWs in Jingjiang city is generally low,but high risk behaviors are still prevalent.More comprehensive and effective prevention measures and intervention should be promoted.
