Influencing factors of alcohol abuse among young men in Chengdu city

Abstract
Objective To explore relevant factors of alcohol abuse in young men aged 18-34 years in Chengdu and to provide evidences for prevention and reduction of alcohol dependence and other alcohol-related problems.Methods With multi-stage random sampling, 2 151 young men aged 18-34 years in Chengdu was inquired and screened using socio-demographic information questionnaire, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test(AUDIT)and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HAD).Results The prevalence of alcohol abuse was 28.7%.The prevalence was different among different age groups.The prevalence of alcohol abuse was 24.7%, 26.2%, 30.2%, and 33.0% for the young men at the age of 18-20, 21-25, 26-30, and 31-34 years, respectively.Anxiety, heavy daily smoking, drug abuse, and with more negative life events were risk factors of alcohol abuse and born in rural area was a protective factor(P<0.05).Conclusion Alcohol abuse among young men in Chengdu can not be ignored.Interventions for high-risk populations of alcohol abuse should be taken to reduce alcohol dependence and other alcohol-related problems.
