Stroke prevalence and its risk factors among population aged 40 years and over in Haidian district, Beijing

  • Objective To examine stroke prevalence and its risk factors among population aged 40 years old and over in Haidian district, Beijing.Methods Totally 10 321 subjects were selected with cluster sampling method.Each participant was invited to receive a face-to-face standardized questionnaire interview, physical examination and carotid ultrasonography.Results Stroke prevalence was 3.9% and age standardized prevalence was 3.5% in the participants.Of 397 stroke patients, 376(94.7%)had ischemic stroke, 17(4.3%)had hemorrhagic stroke, and 4(1.0%)had both.Unconditioned logistic regression analysis showed that age(≥70 years old), smoking, hypertension, heart disease, lipid abnormality, diabetes, overweight, and family history of stroke were major stroke risk factors for the residents aged 40 years old and over in Haidian district.Some occupations(clerk, students/freelancers)were protective factors of stroke for the population.Conclusion People aged 40 years old and over in Haidian district had a high prevalence of stoke, and the main type was ischemic stroke.Age, occupation, smoking, hypertension, heart disease, lipid abnormality, diabetes, overweight, and familial history of stroke are major risk factors for stroke in the residents aged 40 years old and over in Haidian district.
