Association of psychological factors with glaucoma

Abstract
Objective To investigate the status of emotion, sleep quality and personality characteristics among glaucoma patients.Methods Totally 99 glaucoma patients and 108 healthy subjects were recruited and asked to complete Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Athens Insomnia Scale(AIS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI)and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ)and a self-composed general questionnaire.The data were analyzed with statistic means of nonparametric test.Results The score of depression(44.00±12.00)and anxiety(3.00±7.00) of glaucoma patients were higher than those of the control group(P<0.05 for all).The score of overall satisfaction of sleep quality(1.00±2.00)and AIS total score(6.00±6.00) of glaucoma patients were higher than those of the control group(all P<0.05).Glaucoma patients had higher scores for neuroticism(N)(8.00±9.00), extroversion-introversion(E)(8.00±6.00), and psychoticism(P)(7.00±4.00) than the control group.Conclusion Glaucoma patients are more likely to have depression, anxiety and poor sleep quality and have higher scores of neuroticism, extroversion, and psychoticism.
