Prevalent characteristics dengue fever in Fujian province,2004-2013

Objective To describe epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of dengue fever in Fujian province from 2004 to 2013 and to provide evidences for dengue fever prevention and control.Methods Data on epidemics and registered cases of dengue fever were retrospectively collected and analyzed with descriptive epidemiology.Results A total of 398 cases were reported in Fujian province from 2004 to 2013,including 191 imported cases,206 local cases infected by imported cases,and 2 local cases.There were dengue fever outbreaks in the year of 2004,2007,2008,2010 and 2013.Cases were found in 8 administrative regions out of 9 in Fujian and were mainly located in Putian,Fuzhou and Quanzhou municipality(93.9%).Of all counties in Fujian,41%(36/88)reported dengue fever cases,in which 7 counties reported 79.9%(318/398)of the cases.Sporadic cases were found in all months of a year.The peak periods of incident cases reported were September and October,with 62.3%(248/398)of all cases.The local cases caused by imported cases only occurred in August,September and October.Two local cases were reported in June and October,while the imported cases were found during a whole year.Cases were reported among the residents of all ages but the the majority of the cases were at the ages of 15-59 years.The imported cases were from 17 countries in Southeast Asia,Africa and South America,and more imported cases were from Philippines(67 cases,35.1%) and Indonesia(35 cases,18.3%).All 4 serotypes of dengue fever were identified and the main subtypes were dengue I and II.Conclusion The dengue fever cases reported were mainly imported cases and the local cases infected by imported cases and the residents aged 15-59 years are the population at high risk in Fujian province.
