Prevalence of hypertension and its influencing factors among residents in Changle city

  • Objective To assess the prevalence and main impact factors of hypertension among the residents in Changle city and to provide a theoretical basis for comprehensive prevention and control of the disease. Methods Totally 3 133 permanent residents were recruited from 18 townships of Changle city for a face-to-face questionnaire survey and physical examination by using proportionate stratified random sampling method. Results The total prevalence rate of hypertension was 27.0%(811/3 000),(27.1%424/1 566 for the males and 27.0%387/1 434 for the females). There was no significant gender difference in the prevalence.Multivariate analyses showed that aged between 30 and 45 years(odds ratioOR=2.097),aged between 45 and 60 years(OR=8.860),aged more then 60 years(OR=23.318),drinking alcohol frequently(OR=1.659),overweight and central obesity(OR=3.110) were risk factors for hypertension;while annual per capita income more then 50 000 RMB yuan and with junior high school education(OR=0.711) or senior high school education(OR=0.600)were protective factors for hypertension. There was an additive interaction between body mass index and waist-hip ratio. Conclusion Hypertension is associated with many factors and general measures should be taken among the residents in Changle city;the residents with central obese people should pay attention to control weight to reducing the risk of hypertension.
