Infant feeding intention and its determinants among pregnant women in Nanshan district of Shenzhen city

  • Objective To explore the status of infant feeding intention and its determinants among pregnant women.Methods Totally 1 682 pregnant women taking prenatal examination were recruited from Nanshan Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital of Shenzhen city and surveyed about their infant feeding intention,infant feeding attitude and social demographic factors with questionnaries.Results Of the pregnant women,1 389(82.6%)had the exclusive breastfeeding intention,followed by partial breastfeeding intention(11.2%)and the artificially feeding intention(6.2%).The results of the multiple categorical logistic regression indicated that the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale(IIFAS)score(odds ratioOR=1.62,90%confidence interval90%CI:1.48-1.92),age(OR=0.67,90%CI:0.56-0.92),family income per month(≥10 000 YuanRMBper month compared with ≤6 000 Yuan per month)(OR=0.59,90%CI:0.37-0.87),and marriage status(married compared with others)(OR=2.14,90%CI:1.62-3.38)were associated with the exclusive breastfeeding intention.Conclusion The majority of pregnant women in Shenzhen city have correct infant feeding intention and the intention is associated with age,infant feeding attitude,family economic conditions,and marriage status among the women.
