Trend in cancer mortality in residents of Nanjing city,2007-2013

  • Objective To find out the characteristics and trend of cancer death among permanent residents in Nanjing city from 2007 to 2013 and to provide a basis for making cancer prevention policy. Methods Mortality data of residents in Nanjing from 2007-2013 were collected and proportion and rank of death cause were analyzed.Eestimating average annual percent change(EAPC)was adopted to assess the changing trend of mortality rate. Results From 2007 to 2013,the average annual mortality rate of cancer in the residents of Nanjing was 182.96/100 000(178.80/100 000-186.78/100 000).The major cancers presenting an increased mortality rate were pancreatic cancer(EAPC=5.93%),colorectal cancer(EAPC=3.28%),and lung cancer(EAPC=2.09%);whereas,those showing a decreased mortality rate were gastric cancer(EAPC=-2.95%)and hepatic carcinoma(EAPC=-2.28%).Conclusion The overall mortality rate of cancer remained stable from 2007 to 2013 among the residents in Nanjing city, with slight changes in the proportion of cancer types in recent years. On the basis of general cancer prevention, the control of some cancers such as pancreatic and colorectal cancer should be strengthened.
