Status and influencing factors of influenza vaccination among healthcare workers in Qingdao city

  • Objective To examine the coverage of influenza vaccination among healthcare workers(HCWs)and to explore influential factors for seasonal influenza vaccine acceptance. Methods Stratified cluster sampling was adopted and 1 301 HCWs were selected for a questionnaire survey.Descriptive analysis and logistic regression was used in the study. Results Only 4.8%of the HCWs had been vaccinated with influenza vaccine during the 2013-2014 influenza season. The main reason(reported by 43.4%of respondents)for not being vaccinated was the concern on side effects of the vaccination.Multivariate analysis showed that factors associated with higher vaccination rate included working in hospital of first-level(odds ratioOR=8.23, 95%confidence interval95%CI:3.78-17.93), working in hospital of second-level(OR=2.27, 95%CI:1.02-5.06), without vaccination history during previous 3 years(OR=2.01, 95%CI:1.08-3.77), having influenza vaccination every year(OR=3.49, 95%CI:1.23-9.92), worrying about getting flu in a flu season(OR=2.72, 95%CI:1.46-5.05), having the cognition on suffering from flu easily without influenza vaccination(OR:2.49, 95%CI:1.26-4.91), with anticipation of regretting for suffering from flu because of not taking influenza vaccine(OR=3.03, 95%CI:1.29-7.08), with moderate intention to take pre-season influenza vaccination(OR=2.73, 95%CI:1.42-5.26), and with strong intention to take pre-season influenza vaccination(OR=6.44, 95%CI:2.55-16.26).Conclusion The influenza vaccination rate remains low among HCWs in Qingdao city.Lack of confidence to vaccine safety is the main reason for HCWs not taking influenza vaccination. The level of the hospital the HCWs working in, pre-season vaccination intention, prior vaccination history, psychological and attitude factors affect influenza vaccination among the HCWs.
