Smoking status and smoking cessation willingness among 12320 health hotline callers in 10 provinces

  • ObjectiveTo examine smoking status and smoking cessation willingness among 12320 health hotline callers.MethodsAll callers using 12320 health hotline in 10 provinces from February to April,2014 were investigated on their demographics,current and historic status of smoking and smoking cessation through 12320 telephone survey.ResultsAmong the 12 324 participants (61.5% of all callers recruited) with eligible response,the smoking rate was 23.0% and the current smoking rate was 19.6%,with a higher smoking rate in the males than in the females and a higher smoking rate in the participants with lower education than in those with higher education.Of all the smokers,79.2% reported smoking every day; 57.2% and 35.9% smoked 1-10 and 11-20 cigarettes per day;48.6% reported attempt of smoking cessation during the previous one year and 42.4% reported the willingness to begin smoking cessation in the coming month.There were 73.4% of the participants expressing the willing to receive quitline service via 12320 health hotline.ConclusionCallers of 12320 health hotline had a stronger willingness of smoking cessation and a high acceptance for quitline service via 12320 health hotline,suggesting governmental agencies should make more efforts to promote quitting service via 12320 health hotline.
