Status of passive smoking and KAP among pregnant women

ObjectiveTo examine the prevalence of passive smoking during pregnancy and to investigate the situation of knowledge,attitude,practice(KAP) about passive smoking in pregnant women.MethodsThe respondents were pregnant women who took prenatal examination or gave birth to their children in three hospitals in Wuhan municipality,Hubei province of China.A face-to-face anonymous interview was carried out among the participants with a questionnaire on demographic information,the exposure of passive and family smoking,and KAP about passive smoking.ResultsAmong the 806 participants,the prevalence rate of passive smoking during pregnancy was 34.9% ;the average score for passive smoking-related KAP was 8.75±3.46;and a total of 210 families were smoke-free family(21.2%).Compared to the participants without passive smoking exposure,those with passive smoking had a significantly lower average passive smoking-related KAP score(8.35±3.57 vs.8.96±3.38,t=2.32;P=0.021 0).Of the participants,70% were against to their husbands to smoke and 80% agreed to no smoking in public places.The major countermeasure towards passive smoking from their husbands was discussion,while avoidance was a main way to prevent themselves from passive smoking in public places,with the avoidance rates of 42.0% -73.0% in various places,among the participants.ConclusionThe percentage of passive smoking is relatively high but the knowledge about passive smoking is at a low level among the pregnant women in Wuhan municipality,indicating that passive smoking could not be prevented effectively in the population.
