Effects of training on self-management of diabetic patients among professionals from public health and medical institutions at district or county level

  • ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of training on diabetic patient self-management among professionals in grass-roots centers for disease control and prevention(CDCs) and community health centers and to provide references for promoting community-centered diabetic patient self-management programs.MethodsA two-day training course focusing on diabetic patient self-management was delivered to 648 medical professionals from CDCs,community health centers,and general hospitals at district or county levels in Beijing,Shanghai,and Chongqing municipality and Zhejiang,Jiangsu,and Guangdong province.The efficacy of the training was evaluated pre/post the training course with questionnaire surveys.ResultsThere was a statistically significant increase in the score of diabetic patient self-management related knowledge(59.4±15.9 vs.79.3±14.3;t=29.00,P<0.05).In total 25 questions,The rate of correct answers to 21 of 25 questions increased after the training(P<0.05).Of all participants,98.5% considered the training being benefit to their professional work.The influential factors for the improved overall score of diabetes self-management after the training included the score before the training (=-0.669, P<0.01),location of the professionals'institutionsBingjing=-3.005, P<0.05;Shanghai=13.198, P<0.01;Zhejiang=17.944, P<0.01;Jiangsu=19.485, P<0.01;Guangdong =-3.817, P<0.01),type of the professionals' institution(general hospital=-3.014, P>0.05;CDCs=3.117, P<0.01),and the implementation status of diabetic patient self-management progam (not implemented=1.631, P<0.01).ConclusionThe knowledge,attitude and skills for diabetic patient self-management was improved after the short-term training among professionals from CDCs,community health centers and general hospitals at district or county level.
