Option for home-based care and its influencing factors among community older people

  • Objective To explore the status and influencing factors of option for home-based care among community older residents in Tangshan city of Hebei province and to provide references for establishing community home-based care system for the elderly.Methods A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted among 724 residents aged 60 years and older selected with random cluster sampling form 2 communities in Tangshan city from October 2012 to January 2013.Results Of all the elderly,31.5% reported the preference for home-based care;of the 496 elderly having the daily care other than home-based,44.0%,38.9%,and 17.1% chose self-care,care provided by their children,and institution-based care,respectively.Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses revealed that the elderly with all their children living around in the same city,suffering from two or more chronic diseases,and with depression symptoms were more likely to choose home-based care,while those with the monthly pension≥3 800 RMB yuan were more likely to choose the care other than the home-based.Conclusion The option for daily care pattern is influenced mainly by the number of chronic disease suffered from,monthly pension,whether having children living around,and whether suffering from depression among the community elderly in Tangshan city.
