Relationship between sense of school belonging and subjective well-being among college students

  • Objective To study the subjective well-being and its relationship with the sense of school belonging among college students and to provide references for conducting psychological health education in the students. Methods Using cluster sampling,we recruited 327 students in a university in Harbin city for a self-administered survey with Subjective Well-being and Psychological Sense of School Membership between January and April 2013.Results For all the participants, the average scores were 3.75±0.57 for overall subjective well-being,4.34±1.36 for life satisfaction,4.47±1.00 for positive emotion, and 2.84±0.70 for negative emotion. The participants' score for life satisfaction differed significantly by gender, academic achievement, and familial economic status (P<0.05 for all) and the score for positive emotion varied with academic achievement significantly (P<0.05).Among the participants, the sense of school belonging was positively correlated with life satisfaction (r=0.514,P<0.05) and positive emotion (r=0.474,P<0.05)and negatively correlated with negative emotion (r=-0.177,P=P<0.05);the sense of conflict was negatively correlated with life satisfaction (r=-0.352,P<0.05) and positive emotion (r=-0.292,P<0.05) and positively correlated with negative emotion (r=0.327,P<0.05).The sense of school belonging was a good predictor of subjective well-being among the participants, which could explain 27.7% of the variance of life satisfaction,22.8%variance of positive emotion, and 10.7%variance of negative emotion. Conclusion The sense of school belonging is significantly correlated with subjective well-being among college students.
