Prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in Chongqing municipality,2007-2014

  • Objective To examine prevalence trend and characteristics of sexually transmitted diseases(STDs) in Chongqing municipality between 2007 and 2014,and to provide evidences for STDs prevention.Methods Data on reported STDs incidences in Chongqing municipality from 2007 through 2014 were collected via China Information System for Diseases Control and Prevention.Results The morbidity of STDs showed an increasing trend in Chongqing municipality during the 8-year period,with the increased annual number of cases and morbidity reported from 12 686 and 45.18/100 000 in 2007 to 19 137 and 64.45/100 000 in 2014 and an average annual growth rate of 5.21%.Syphilis accounted a major proportion of the 5 STDs reported and annual reported incidence of syphilis increased yearly.The reported STDs incidence was higher in urban areas than in other areas,with the incidence rates of higher than 110/100 000 for the top three epidemic areas; while,lower annual incidence rates (less than 50/100 000) were reported in south-eastern and north-western areas of Chongqing municipality.The reported STDs incidence rate was slightly higher among the females than among the males; although the incidence rate was the highest among sexually active individuals aged 20 to 45 years,which accounted for 63.13% of all cases reported,the proportion of reported cases aged 60 years and above increased yearly during the period.The major part (48.62%)of the reported STDs cases were farmers,household workers and the unemployed.Conclusion In Chongqing municipality,STDs epidemic is at a low prevalence level but increases slowly; the reported STD incidence is higher in urban and economically developed areas than in suburban,undeveloped,and rural areas and the ratio of reported cases aged 60 years and older increases yearly.
