HIV/TP infection and related factors of among male attendees of STD clinic

  • ObjectiveTo examine the prevalence and related factors of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum (TP) infection among male persons visiting sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and to provide evidences for carrying out relevant interventions in the population.MethodsQuestionnaire survey and venous blood collection for HIV and TP antibody detection were performed among male voluntary STD clinic attendees aged>15 years between April and June from 2013 to 2014 in Tianjin city.ResultsFor a total of 800 male attendees surveyed, the average age was 30.4±8.2 years;the overall rate of awareness about AIDS was 90.6%;the positive rates of HIV and TP antibody were 5.4% and 7.0%,respectively.The results of logistic regression analysis showed that main related factors for HIV infection among the attendees included having homosexual anal sex (odds ratio OR=5.360,95% confidence interval 95%CI=2.676-10.734) and with TP infection (OR=4.014,95%CI=1.761-9.145);while the main related factor of TP infection was HIV infection (OR=3.602,95%CI=1.525-8.508).ConclusionThe infection rates of HIV and TP are relatively high among male STD clinic attendees in Tianjin city, suggesting effective health education and intervention on HIV and STD should be implemented among the population.
