Prevalence and risk factors of hypertension among adult residents in Tibet

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension among adult residents in Tibet region.MethodsTotally of 1 264 residents aged 20 years or older living in urban Lhasa municipality or in rural areas of Dangxiong county of Tibet Autonomous Region were selected with stratified multistage random sampling and surveyed with a questionnaire,physical examination,and laboratory test between July and September 2007.ResultsAmong the residents,373 were detected with hypertension and the crude prevalence of hypertension was 29.5% and the age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of hypertension was 33.7%.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that older age,alcohol drinking,and central obesity were risk factors of hypertension and female gender was a protective factor of hypertension.ConclusionThe prevalence rate of hypertension in adult Tibet residents was higher than in residents of other regions of China and age,gender,alcohol drinking,and central obesity are main influencing factors of hypertension among the residents.
