Prevalence of hypertension and its impact on quality of life among rural Dai residnts in Yunnan province

  • ObjectiveTo explore the prevalence of hypertension and its impact on the quality of life (QOL) among rural Dai residents in Yunnan province and to provide evidences for effective management and treatment of hypertension and improvement of QOL of hypertensives among ethnic minority residents.MethodsQuestionnaire survey and blood pressure measurement were conducted among 1 397 Dai residents aged ≥35 years selected with stratified random sampling from 6 villages in Mangshi municipality of Dehong prefecture in Yunnan province in January 2014.The Medical Outcome Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used in the survey.ResultsThe prevalence rate of hypertension among the Dai residents was 55.2%.Compared to the Dai residents with normal blood pressure, the identified Dai hypertension patients had significantly lower QOL domain scores for physical functioning (75.52±39.45 vs.92.76±13.99),role physical (79.41±18.20 vs.87.18±30.11),bodily pain (79.41±18.20 vs.84.31±16.93),general health (56.83±16.97 vs.62.71±14.91),vitality (73.17±11.54 vs.75.08±9.23),role emotional (89.28±29.08 vs.93.93±22.44),mental health (79.90±10.12 vs.80.94±8.61),physical component summary (74.50±18.69 vs.81.74±14.18),and mental component summary (83.87±10.69 vs.85.97±8.45),respectively (P<0.05 for all). The score of social function in the Dai hypertension patients and residents with normal blood pressure were 93.11±11.35 and 93.95±9.83,without significant difference (P>0.05).ConclusionHypertension prevalence rate is relative high and hypertension has negative impact on QOL among rural Dai residents in Mangshi municipality of Yunnan province.
