Mediating effect of quality of life on relationship between pain and anxiey among middle aged and elderly patients with glaucoma

  • ObjectiveTo explore the mediating effect of quality of life (QoL) on the correlation between pain and anxiey in middle aged and elderly patients with glaucoma.MethodsA total of 450 glaucoma patients aged 45-86 years and with eye pain were recruited at 5 hospitals of first class-grade three in Liaoning province from September 2015 to October 2016 for a questionnaire survey using Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS),Brief Pain Inventory (BPI),and Glau-QoL 15-item Questionnaire (GQL15).SPSS 19.0 and AMOS 21.0 were used in data analyses.ResultsThe average anxiety score was 44.49±18.92 and the prevalence rate of anxiety was 33.80% among the participants. There were significantly positive correlations of axiety with scores of QoL (r=0.502,P<0.01) and pain (r=0.337,P<0.01) and QoL was significantly correlated positively with the score of pain (r=0.244,P<0.01).Pain impacted not only directly on anxiety but also indirectly through intermediary role of QoL on anxiety and the intermediary effect accounted for 42.20% of overall effect.ConclusionThe quality of life is an intermediary variable midating the relationship between pain and anxiety among middle aged and elderly glaucoma patients.
