Prevalence and risk factors of metabolic syndrome among adult inhabitants in Jiangxi province

  • Objective To explore the prevalence and influential factors of metabolic syndrome (MS) among adult residents in Jiangxi province and to provide evidences for conducting relevant intervention measures.Methods A total of 5 997 residents aged 18 years and older from 10 disease surveillance points in Jiangxi province were selected with multistage stratified cluster random sampling; then a questionnaire survey,physical examination and laboratory tests were carried out maong the residents between July and October 2013.Results Among the participants,the MS prevalence rate was 11.71% and the standardized rate was 9.95%; the detection rates were 28.28% for overweight or obesity,22.59% for hyperglycemia,27.79% for hypertension,and 25.57% for dyslipidemia,respectively.Stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis showed that aged more than 45 years,with merital status of married/cohabitation/separated/divorced/widowed,and having a sedentary time of more than 3 hours per day were risk factors of MS; whereas female gender was a protective factor.Conclusion The prevalence of MS was high and mainly influenced by gender,age,marital status,and sedentary time among adult residents in Jiangxi province.
