Sleeping quality and its influential factors among elderly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

  • Objective To exploore sleeping quality and its influential factors among the elderly with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to provide bases for improvement of quality of life of the patients. Methods Using stratified multistage random cluster sampling,6 173 urban and rural community residents aged 60 years old and above were recruited from three municipal regions of Hebei province and face-to-face household questionnaire interviews were conducted among the elderly with a self-designed general demography questionnaire,Pittsburgh Sleeping Quality Index (PSQI),the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36),Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS),and Adult Health Self-Management Skills Assessment Scale (AHSMSRS) from July 2012 through May 2013.Results Of the elderly,1 641(26.6%)had sleep disorders and 567 were COPD patients. The average PSQI score was 5.75±3.321 for the 567 COPD patients,of them,204 (36.0%)had sleep disorders (with the PSQI score of >7).Multi-variate analysis showed that long-term medication, prolonged bed rest, health status,self-health management capability were the main influencing factors of sleeping quality among the elderly COPD patients (P<0.05 for all). Conclusion Sleeping quality is influenced by multiple factors among community elderly COPD patients;reducing time of bed rest and duration of medication and promoting general health and self-health management capability may improve sleeping quality of the elderly COPD patients.
