Relationship between obesity-related anthropometric indexes and stroke among rural residents in Liaoning province

  • Objective To explore the relationship between obesity-related anthropometric indexes and stroke among rural residents in Liaoning province, and to provide references for the prevention and control of stroke. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study at 26 villages of 3 towns selected with multi-stage stratified random cluster-sampling in Dawa,Zhangwu, and Liaoyang county of Liaoning province from January 2012 to August 2013.All eligible permanent residents (n=11 345) aged ≥35 years were included in the study and were surveyed with a questionnaire interview, physical examination and laboratory test.Associations of A body shape index (ABSI),body roundness index (BRI),body mass index (BMI),waist circumference (WC),and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with stroke among the participants were analyzed. Results Totally 996 stroke patients were identified, with a stroke prevalence of 8.8%,among all the participants. The stroke prevalence among the participants with the lowest quartiles of ABSI,BRI,BMI,WC,and WHR were compared to that of the participants with the highest quartiles of those five indicators. After adjusting confounding covariates such as age, ethnicity, education level, average annual household income, smoking, alcohol drinking, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol,triglyceride,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood lipids, and uric acid, the results of unconditional multivariate logistic regression showed no significant associations of the five obesity-related indexes with stroke among the male participants (P>0.05 for all);whereas, among the female participants,BRI was the strongest predictor for stroke (odds ratioOR=1.81,95% confidence interval 95%CI:1.36-2.42),followed by WHR (OR=1.75,95%CI:1.31-2.34),WC (OR=1.55,95%CI:1.16-2.07),and BMI (OR=1.47,95%CI:1.09-1.98) and ABSI was the weakest predictor (OR=1.42,95%CI:1.08-1.87).Conclusion The results showed different ability of ABSI,BMI,BRI,WC and WHR for stroke prediction among rural residents and BRI may be an alternative obesity measurement in assessment of stroke risk among female residents in Liaoning province.
