Effect of ethanol on rat serum lipid profile and protective effect of ginkgetin

  •   Objective   To study the dynamic response of rat serum lipid profile after chronic ethanol administration with different dose and the regulating effect of ginkgetin on lipid disorder induced by high ethanol.
Methods   Male SD rats were administrated ethanol at a dose of 0.8, 1.6, and 2.4 g/kg and pretreated by low(48 mg/kg)or high ginkgetin(96 mg/kg).Serum total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), high and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C and LDL-C)were measured on day 30, 60 and 90 for ethanol-fed or ginkgetin pretreated rats, and compared with the corresponding findings of normal control and ginkgetin control.
Results   Low ethanol for rats increased serum HDL-C level, but had no substantial influence on other lipid parameters.Medium exposure of ethanol increased TG, TC and HDL content, however, the increasing extent of HDL-C gradually diminished.High intake of ethanol resulted in serum dyslipidemia and the deleterious effect was exacerbated with ethanol exposure duration.Ginkgetin preconditioning inhibited the elevation of TG, TC and LDL-C, and the decrease of HDL-C for high ethanol-fed rats.
Conclusion   HDL-C concentration is increased in the presence of low ethanol. The protective effect elicited by HDL-C is gradually lost accompanying the decline of its content elicited from medium ethanol regime.High ethanol-induced hyper lipidemia is continuously agg ravated with administration.Ginkgetin exerts favorable regulating effect on dyslipidemia provoked by high ethanol.
